The Bastakia Quarter (also known as Al-Fahidi and occasionally spelt Bastakiya) is one of Dubai's most popular tourist destinations. It was built in the late 19th century and is known as Old Dubai. It is located in the eastern part of Bur Dubai. The neighbourhood was intended to be home to wealthy Persian merchants who took advantage of the tax-free trading (the structures resemble the traditional architectural style of Iranian seaside houses). The buildings in the region are in excellent condition. Wind towers were built next to houses to provide a cooling system by capturing the wind and funnelling it down into the homes.
